The proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples embracing apprenticeship pathways has more than doubled over the past 17 years, according to a new study.
The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) report found that between 2004 and 2021, First Nations trade commencements increased from 2.3% to 5.6%.
The report also found that non-trade commencements among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people rose from 5.2% to 9.5%.
Those more likely to undertake an apprenticeship as opposed to a higher education pathway included men, those who speak English at home, attended a government school, or live in a regional or rural area.
Migrants and first generation Australians were less likely to undertake a trade pathway.
